WORKERS’ COMPENSATION: MULTIPLE INJURED IN TRAGIC BOAT EXPLOSION

On behalf of The Law Office of David Hunt LTD Jan. 25, 2018

Work accidents can occur in any industry in Illinois, but some industries contain different risks than others. If a work injury occurs and injuries result, medical expenses related to the injury should be covered by workers’ compensation insurance benefits. A recent explosion on a tugboat has left many workers in a different state with serious injuries and medical expenses.

A tugboat was docked for repairs at First Marine on the Tennessee River when the explosion occurred. At this time, the events that proceeded the explosion have not been determined, but authorities do not suspect any foul play. The explosion, which is believed to have originated from inside the boat, resulted in a flash fire.

At the time of the accident, an estimated 41 workers were either inside or working near the boat and may have worked for one of four different companies contracted for the repairs. Many suffered serious injuries, and three victims did not survive. In addition to traditional emergency workers, the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the accident. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has also begun its own investigation.

Workers’ compensation insurance is a benefit that most employers are required to provide for unfortunate accidents such as this one. Although it is considered a benefit, it is often a difficult system to navigate and file a claim. Many victims of work accidents and families of deceased victims find comfort in consulting an experienced Illinois attorney to assist them in filing a claim. If claims or medical coverage is denied for any reason, attorneys can continue to advocate on an employee’s behalf.
