SKATEBOARDING AND TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS
Aug. 24, 2020
Whether someone is operating a vehicle, riding a bicycle or walking near traffic, all road users face dangers. However, skateboarders are especially vulnerable in certain instances, and many skateboarders are seriously hurt when they are involved in traffic accidents. When a vehicle collides with a skateboarder, the outcome is often devastating, especially if the vehicle is traveling at a high rate of speed.
It is imperative for skateboarders who are involved in traffic accidents to go over the details of the incident and take a firm stand for their legal rights if the accident was caused by a driver’s negligence.
Skateboarding and Road Safety
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are many precautionary measures that skateboarders can take to reduce the likelihood of a traffic accident. For example, drivers often have more difficulty seeing skateboarders at night, so it is smart for people to ride their skateboard during daylight hours. Collisions that involve cars and other vehicles are often some of the most serious skateboarding accidents and skateboarders should always watch out for vehicles. Protective gear, such as helmets, is also paramount.
Negligent Drivers and Skateboarding Accidents
Unfortunately, many skateboarding accidents occur on the road because of driver recklessness. For example, some drivers get behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs or alcohol and drivers also endanger the lives of skateboarders by speeding or using their phone behind the wheel. When this careless behavior results in an accident, drivers responsible for injuries need to answer for their actions. Sadly, many skateboarders will sustain serious injuries and pass away in the coming months and years due to negligent drivers.
